Bird bioacoustic monitoring services and technology

Bird bioacoustic monitoring services and technology

At CSX, we specialise in using automated bioacoustic monitoring devices to record and then measure and monitor the biodiversity of birds. Our advanced approach uses bioacoustic technology to identify bird species and track the frequency of bird calls across habitats.

What is bioacoustic monitoring?

Bioacoustic monitoring is a survey technique that uses passive acoustic recorders to capture  the sounds of wildlife, such as bird calls, with this data then being analysed to identify species presence, richness, and diversity. It provides valuable insights into the impacts of changes in habitats over time, enabling better understanding of ecosystem dynamics. On BNG sites, these insights can help track biodiversity changes and assess the impact of restoration, conservation and offsetting efforts.

The benefits of bioacoustic technology

When considering BNG the DEFRA metric only considers vegetation habitats. However, vegetation is only one component of biodiversity. CSX’s bird biodiversity monitoring adds a new level of detail to your biodiversity monitoring metrics, providing a deeper insight and understanding to the type of biodiversity present on your land.

BNG projects can evidence any change in biodiversity through regular bioacoustic monitoring surveys to provide a better representation of the ongoing processes and functionality of ecosystems.

Using passive acoustic monitoring and CSX’s analysis of this data, BNG projects can demonstrate changes in biodiversity over time. With regular monitoring surveys, we provide a comprehensive representation of ecosystem functionality. As habitats evolve due to land management changes, our bioacoustics programme detects increases in bird species diversity, offering actionable insights for bird conservation efforts.

How does bioacoustic monitoring work

01

Deployment

Our team deploys acoustic monitoring devices at your chosen site, recording bird activity at consistent intervals during the survey period.

02

Collection

Once the survey period has concluded, we will collect the monitors for data analysis.

03

Audio analysis

Using advanced bioacoustic and machine learning analysis, we process the recordings to identify bird species and generate key biodiversity metrics. This process uses bioacoustic software and machines learning processing to provide precise insights into species diversity and acoustic indices.

04

Survey report

CSX produces a detailed survey report that outlines the results from our bioacoustic monitoring devices. This includes an analysis of species diversity and abundance over time, as well as changes in acoustic indices.

05

Ongoing passive acoustic monitoring

We offer tailored ongoing passive acoustic monitoring plans based on your site’s unique needs. The duration of monitoring is flexible, enabling a depth of analysis that aligns with your goals.

Our recommended package

We recommend a package that includes two monitoring devices, which can effectively cover up to 12 hectares depending on site conditions like elevation and vegetation density. If you require broader coverage, speak to one of our experts on 01609 786655 or email contact@csxcarbon.com for our customised solutions.

Our bioacousitic monitors are deployed for a four-week period, with comprehensive on-site support. Your survey report will track and display changes in species abundance, diversity, and acoustic indices over time. For robust and accurate biodiversity metrics, we recommend conducting at least two bird surveys per year, tailored to habitat type and survey objectives.
